One of the things I love about February is that wintertime in New York is very cold. Cold weather is perfect for curling up with a warm dog, a hot cup of ginger tea and a good book. Add a pair of fuzzy slippers and some big, fat snowflakes drifting past the window and I’m in heaven.
I love what I do. I think it’s important to feel that way about your work. Aunt Polly, in my chapter book PIE loves to bake pies. And the cat in my picture book GLAMOURPUSS loves to be glamorous. I enjoy writing picture books and novels. I also enjoy reading both picture books and novels. Take it from me, you’re never too old for picture books!
Here are some things that make me happy: Seeing the sun rise, hearing a marching band play, smelling cookies baking, touching a baby’s head and tasting pie – unless it’s banana cream. I do not like banana cream pie! I rely on my five senses all the time when I write. They are your five best friends when you’re trying to describe things. I like to do my writing at home, in a quiet room. I don’t play music when I’m working, but I do sometimes do a little happy dance when things are going well. My husband is the only person who’s ever seen that dance, and I plan to keep it that way.
I do A LOT of school visits, and I get A LOT of fan mail so part of my job is that I have to answer A LOT of questions. People always want to know what my favorite book is that I’ve written. The answer is....I don’t have one! I’ve written fifty-five books so far and I like them all. The longest book I’ve ever written is called, SO B. IT. The shortest book I’ve ever written is called HUGE HAMBURGER. The first book I ever wrote is a picture book called HURRICANE CITY and my most recent book is a chapter book called SAVE ME A SEAT. I wrote it with my friend, Gita Varadarajan. It’s coming out in May and I hope you’ll keep an eye out for it.
The most exciting thing that’s happened to me lately is that my novel, So B It was turned into a movie. I got to help work on the script, and I even got to go out to Hollywood to watch them filming. It was an experience I will never forget and I can hardly wait for the movie to come out! If you want to read more about it, and see pictures form the set you can visit my website.
I hope you’ll curl up with a good book today and every day!
